Raising a child is definitely not an easy task. Thankfully, today’s parents-especially new mothers-have access to countless baby products that promise to make life easier. But the real challenge is that there are simply too many options available, which can easily confuse first-time parents. On top of that, most baby products are expensive, so it becomes important to choose wisely.
Many parents love setting up a beautiful nursery for their baby, and in the process, they end up buying a lot of fancy items. While some of these products are useful, many are honestly unnecessary.
From my personal experience, I can say that it is completely normal for mothers to feel overwhelmed and end up buying too many baby items. It’s easy to go overboard, but it often leads to wasted money and unused products. A smarter approach is to start with the basic baby essentials, and then buy additional items only when you truly need them.
To help you avoid overspending, I’m sharing a list of the must-have baby essentials for the first year, based on everything I personally bought and actually used.
Crib
Crib is a must for those parents who are sure of not co sleeping. I was initially confused but later we decided to co sleep with our daughter as it was just too convenient. We have a big bed so it was not a problem. For parents with space constraints or who follow the theory of no bed sharing, a crib is a must. Crib safety standards must be adhered to and if you are using a second hand one, ensure there is no danger for the baby.
Cribs come with different features thus, research and see what suits you the best. Sometimes a convertible bed or sometimes ones with storage or a changing table can be preferred over the others. Drop railings though are convenient, but are considered unsafe. The mattress of the crib must also be bought carefully.
Stroller or Pram
A stroller is a must have item as soon as the baby is born. This is something I would suggest you buy before you get the baby home. Carrying the baby from one place to the other becomes very simple with a stroller. You must ensure it is not very heavy but is sturdy. Also, a stroller which opens and closes easily, must be preferred. If you intend to use a second-hand stroller, please ensure it is in good condition and has all security features in place.
Most strollers have reclining backs which can be adjusted as the baby grows and is able to sit properly. You must also ensure the safety harnesses are good so that the baby is safely secured at all times. Keep in mind the places you will use it the most, so buy a stroller accordingly.
Car Seat
Though car seats are not a popular choice in India, but in my opinion, are a must. This should be on the top of your list as these not only make travel easier but also ensure safety for a child. You should mostly opt for a new car seat as they will definitely meet the latest standards. The car seat can be one which can be used for six years else one can buy an infant car seat initially and then move on to the next level.
This isn’t exactly a must-have item, but my daughter used it a lot-and she still does. It honestly made life much easier for us, so I would definitely recommend it.
We bought it when she was around 3 months old. She would comfortably sleep on it or sit in it for hours, just looking around. It was a nice change for her because she was getting bored of lying down all day.
We also used it while feeding her milk, and later even for solids when she started eating but wasn’t able to sit properly on her own. Some gliders can even be converted into chairs, which makes them useful for a few years as the child grows.
High Chair
A high chair does not have to be bought in the first six months but yes, when the baby starts eating solids and can sit with support these are a must have. High chairs come in various models so you can choose the one which suits the best. I have bought one which can also be used as a booster chair and then converts to a table and chair, thus, we should be able to use it for some years. High chairs make it easy for a parent to feed the children, and they can learn to eat on their own making a mess of things and ultimately learn to eat like an adult.
Chest of Drawers
Baby clothes are very small and they can get mixed up and get lost in big cupboards. I used a simple chest of drawer which made it very simple for me to manage her clothes. A separate drawer was used for different items like pajamas or shirts or onesies. This also helped others in the house know where her things were and were not always dependent on me. We still use two chests for her and this makes her stuff very organized.
Changing Table
This is something I did not buy but parents who want a designated spot for diaper changes can buy. There are various models available and you can buy the one which has all security straps and a place to keep supplies. The cover should be easily washable as this might need to be cleaned often. For those who are not looking at a changing table buying a waterproof mat can be an option as these can be used for diaper changes anywhere.
Baby Monitor
If you plan to make your baby sleep in a crib or leave them in a room for some time while you manage household work, a baby monitor is a must-have. It allows you to keep an eye on your baby without having to stay beside them the entire time. With both audio and video options, you can watch your baby and also hear them cry whenever they need you.
These are some of the essential baby items you may need during your child’s first year. Once you start shopping, you’ll be amazed by the huge variety of products available. My suggestion is to take some time to research, read reviews, and seek advice from other moms before buying.
Many times, before the baby arrives, we don’t fully understand what we will actually need. So instead of buying everything, focus on purchasing items that are useful and that your baby will truly use.
Most importantly-enjoy this beautiful journey of motherhood!
