A baby’s skin is very sensitive making it prone to rashes. We as mothers needs to take a lot of care to avoid any kind of diaper rash. Those red rashes on your baby’s bum can really break your heart. It is not uncommon for kids to have diaper rashes. The main reasons why your darling can have a rash are:

  • Leaving a soiled diaper for too long
  • Bacterial or yeast infection
  • Skin rubbing the diaper
  • Allergy to some particular brand

Newborn kids have an extremely sensitive skin and thus, extra care needs to be taken. With my new born I ensured the diaper was changed every two hours irrespective of the fact how full it was. As my daughter grew I noticed that the skin started to toughen up and the diaper could be left for longer. To ensure her skin was safe, I would apply a coat of diaper rash cream to reduce frequency of rashes. We continue to do this till date.

Diaper rashes can be irritating for the baby and thus, you must take care to avoid them. Let us talk about some of the best creams available for diaper rash in India. Each child is different so you need to try and see what suits your little one the most.

Destin

Destin is one cream I personally swear by. I have used it when she had rashes as a baby and now I continue to apply it for the night when we don’t change her diaper. This comes in two variants, Destin Maximum Strength Nappy Cream and Destin Rapid Relief Nappy Cream. The difference is in the percentage of zinc oxide. I have only used the latter, though the former is known to provide instant relief in times of a bad rash. You will find it thick and tough to wipe off, but that is what is needed to provide relief as it does not get washed away easily.

Himalaya

When it comes to not spending too much and not compromising on the quality, Himalaya diaper rash cream is the best option in the Indian market. It contains aloe vera, almond oil, five leaved chaste tree and natural zinc. It reduces the inflammation and bacterial infection healing the skin and the zinc does not let the wetness in the diaper affect the skin. The product I feel, is suitable for day to day use or mild rashes but is not very effective in times of a bad rash.

Chicco

I used the Chicco cream daily for my daughter as a protection. It did not contain any harmful chemicals and had a nice smell. The cream is not sticky and is easily absorbed in the skin and provides the sensitive skin from bacteria which can cause rashes. It was good for using daily, but again like the Himalaya cream not very effective for bad rashes.

Sudocrem

The Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing cream has a water repellant base and thus, provides a protective layer to the baby’s skin helping to heal it faster. In case of painful rashes, the cream is very effective as it has anesthetic and antiseptic properties. Besides a diaper rash, the cream is also helpful for other skin problems.

Palmer’s Bottom Butter

I have never used Palmer’s Bottom Butter but have heard good reviews about this one. It contains vitamin E, cocoa butter, lavender and chamomile oil, shea butter and petrolatum which like zinc oxide forms a protective layer. This does not contain harmful chemicals and keeps the skin moisturized.

Cetaphil

This cream is again a popular choice with mothers and it contains Vitamin E and B5 along with calendula and zinc oxide. Cetaphil like the many others is good for daily use to prevent a rash and help healing minor ones but does not provide relief in case of a bad rash.

Sebamed

This unlike the other products in the market contains titanium oxide instead of zinc oxide. Sebamed makes it less thick as compared to products like destin but I feel, it is not as effective. It has a balanced pH like other products, but is not my personal favorite due to its efficiency and high price. Many mothers like the product as it helps moisturize and protect the skin.

Rashfree Cream

This one was recommended by my pediatrician when my daughter got a bad rash. This is available at the chemist and contains zinc oxide. The packing is not very impressive but it is very effective in case of a bad rash and provides relief after one application.

Some other creams available which I have not tried personally but are known to be good are:

  • Pigeon Baby Diaper Rash Cream
  • Johnson’s Baby Diaper Rash Cream
  • Mothercare-All We Know Baby Nappy Cream

Applying a little amount of the cream when using daily is recommended for new born babies after they have been wiped and are dry. In times of a bad rash, a thick layer should be applied and the affected area should not be rubbed with the wipe to clean. If the cream remains it should not be wiped off completely. Also, if the rash is severe, avoid using any wipes and use baby cotton and water to clean the baby.

If you like to use natural things then the following three are the best option to prevent and cure a diaper rash:

  • Cold pressed virgin coconut oil
  • Breast milk
  • Vaseline

A diaper rash can cause a lot of discomfort to the baby and it is always advisable to avoid it. Few simple things that can be done to prevent it are:

  • New born babies dirty their diaper frequently and thus, change the diaper every two hours or use the wetness indicator. Never leave the baby in a soiled diaper.
  • Try and leave the baby diaper free or use cotton nappies for some time to allow the skin to breathe. This for sure is not an easy thing as they grow and move, but can be done when they are small and are not sleeping. Use a quick dry mat and leave them without a diaper for some time between diaper changes.
  • Use very gentle baby wipes like water wipes or use cotton and water.
  • Every time you change the diaper, apply a little amount of the diaper rash cream or oil or Vaseline
  • When the baby starts eating food, there will be changes in their poop pattern and they can get rashes easily. Extra care should be taken at this time.

We are a blessed generation as we have many options available to bring up our baby in a comfortable way. You might need to try different products and see which suits your baby the most. Happy Motherhood!!

  1. […] For bad diaper rashes, it is often recommended that we use a diaper rash cream which has a high level of zinc oxide. These creams are a great option to treat irritated skin. Creams like Desitin are one of the best diaper rash creams available and they give immediate relief without any side effects as they do not have parabens and harsh ingredients. So next time, there is a minor cut, burn or scrapes, you can try using your baby’s diaper rash cream. (Read our post, Best Diaper Rash Creams in India) […]
